“I first learned about SSRD’s 2024 Bootcamp by seeing the event on Facebook. I thought to myself ‘That sounds like it could be so much fun! But am I too old for it? I’m pretty out of shape and I can’t even remember the last time I put a pair of skates on!’. I carried those concerns with me to the first day of bootcamp, but found the space filled with people of varying ages, body types, and skating abilities! I have rarely experienced such welcoming acceptance within a community, even as a total stranger. I felt like I was given permission to perform within my current level of ability and supported with guidance and tips to grow. I had so much fun every time I went that those concerns slowly disappeared because even if there was any truth in them, they didn’t matter anymore. All that mattered to me was that I wanted to show up, put on my skates, try something new, and celebrate every little win with my newfound friends.
Bootcamp was so worth it for me because when I graduated, I had the confidence and skills to join the league, continue improving, and keep up during practice.
Finding Roller Derby and joining SSRD has been an amazing excuse for me to improve so much in my life. It was my outlet when I cut out alcohol and my reason to finally quit vaping. It provided me with goals and aspirations to start cross-training, eating better, getting stronger, and building my glutes (heyo)! It has also given me a reason to really challenge myself, my esteem, my social anxieties. Working through fear and doubt and coming out the other side a little bruised, maybe, but otherwise unscathed.
Now, I have no idea what I would do without my beloved, supportive team and our challenging, rewarding sport.”
“My experience with the roller derby boot camp hosted by SSRD was educational and the team of experienced skaters made it easy to learn and improve my roller skating abilities. I started not knowing how to skate at all, and ended being much more confident in myself and being on skates. The instructors were supportive, inspiring, knowledgeable, and were attentive in a one-on-one setting, making sure my gear was setup correctly and that I felt comfortable in skates. I am very grateful for the experience, and will be attending the next boot camp!”
“I am so glad I let my impulsive thoughts to join this roller derby boot camp take over. It was a really great experience learning a new sport and more Importantly it’s a lot fun. Everyone is very attentive especially when it comes to safety and that gave me a lot of confidence to join the team. You can really feel the love of derby with these peeps.”
“SSRD roller derby boot camp helped me remember how to skate and the basics of a sport I now love. I had not skated in years and was out of practice but every week I got a little better and remembered what I was doing. Thanks to the coaching of the volunteers running the camp, I know a bit more of what I’m doing and feel way more comfortable on 8 wheels. I enjoyed learning how to fall in a way that won’t injure you and learning to jump. I’m looking forward to taking the boot camp again in 2025!”
“I participated in Boot Camp in 2023 as a skater. It was me making my way back to derby after the pandemic and having another baby. It was so fun and I learned so much! The supportive and inclusive environment made it easy to jump into something vulnerable. Afterwards, I re-joined the league. In 2024 I helped run boot camp and it was so much fun helping the skaters learn and grow. This year I am helping to plan boot camp and I am even more excited. Let’s just say I’m hooked and I can’t wait for you to be too!”
